The Black Cap: Illustrating London's lore and witchcraft
Honey and the Hex is a sister duo podcast exploring the origins, traditions and intersections of folklore and where they lie today. Through a progressive lens they delve into myths, magic and mystery in English and Sacottish folklore.
My goal goal was to illustrate the episode story about the Black Cap PUB, also adding my voice on it. Through my research, I've found different references about the PUB, including tales in websites and in books - even on Bram Stoker's writing. In summary, the PUB has a back story about a witch that was know locally by her powers and potions. The story tells that the last time he has seen was coming back home in the company of the Devil himself. The story has different versions, and ofter it gets blurry, so I highly recommend you to listen to the episode, as the duo have a superpower of condensing and explaining its fascinating details
Here is an embedded episode o the podcast you can listen directly from here.
I decided to use a typeface named Dark, from Gabriel Meave - one of my heroes. It's a hybrid font that mixes the bâtarde, texture and fraktur styles, which is the connection I've made with the story of the witch. I mentioned Stoker and the passage where he describes the place, as if was part of this big cut out: the PUB, the font, my voice, the podcast... all connected through the witch and her powers.
